VÍ Vid Reviews Kiko Port Restaurant, Oliva.

Oliva and its sister town of Pego sit astride the boundary between the Marina Alta of Alicante and the La Safor of Valencia Province. Pego is inland without a border on the sea whilst old Oliva with its rural traditions is inland, `new Oliva´ is between the sea and the old town with its new developments, sports port and  restaurants. Around the end of January 2014 we visited a new Bodega in El Azagador, a hamlet of nearby Requena, to see the new facilities which had risen on the site of the old local cooperative. VÍ vid Visits Bodegas Baronia de Turis.

What looks as though it could be a busy February got of to a quick start with a visit to Bodegas Baronia de Turis. The bodega is fast approaching its 100th anniversary having been built in 1920 and is still in the original building. Joan Picó, winemaker at the bodega  explained that they were still using the old structure but were adapting it continually to house the latest technology. Bocopa, the Petrer based bodega, celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. 1987 was the year that saw several small bodegas in DO Alicante pool their resources to improve their marketing prospects and production techniques and volumes. The new bodega brought together some 8000 hectares of vines, mostly in the Vinalopó and  La Marina Alta together with 1800 vineyard owners.
